I’m Back Due to High Demand…Updates From Madrid

I really thought I was done Blogging about my travels but more and more people keep signing up for my Blog so here I am again…
Today I’m writing this from rainy and cold Madrid. I was just in Melbourne, Australia where it was in the 90’s, Madrid is 36 and rainy-No bueno. I’m staying with my friend Alberto who I traveled with on Remote Year (RY) last year. This kind of situation where I have people to see all over the world is one of the perks from my RY travels. Perth was my first stop in Australia to see my “Fearless Leader” Zoe from RY back in early February. Since I completed RY I spent almost all of January in Vietnam and about 10 days in the Philippines, three weeks in Australia and now I am back in Madrid to travel for two months in Europe.
I swore to myself that I would slow down in 2018, that was my intention but I have not even come close to that. When I left RY from Tokyo I traveled to Taiwan for a few days before hitting Hanoi in Vietnam in the north. I had no idea how cold Hanoi gets in January but I found out quick enough. I wanted warmth after a cold month in Japan in December. So while I was in Vietnam I literally chased the sun and headed south to about 6 different cities and and one island, Phu Quoc. I stayed on the east coast of Vietnam for about three weeks. From Vietnam I hooked up with my friend Shane, another person from RY. He’s half Filipino and has family in Manila and Cebu in the Philippines. We spent about 10 days hitting some islands and motor biking around. The water is beautiful there as well as the wildlife. There were two really cool things we did, swam with Whale Sharks in Bohol and saw the cutest little guys the Tarsiers in Cebu. From the Philippines I went on to Australia for just about three weeks.

Perth was my first stop to see Zoe. It’s a nice, clean city with some really sweet beaches. From Perth I did a quick stop in Sydney then I went to a place I’ve been wanting to go for a very long time, Uluru or Ayers Rock. It’s a huge rock formation in the center of Australia. I ended up doing two sunrises and two sunsets while there. A truly incredible place and so glad I went. Sydney was my next stop for about a week. I was in Sydney back 2001 and it just seemed smaller to me but this time but it’s massive as far as land mass goes. I stayed in Bondi by the beach for two days with all of the pretty peole. Weather was perfect and then on to Sydney again and stayed downtown. Weather was not so good for me there, lots of rain and clouds. I did meet up with some friends that were also in Sydney, all from RY, (are you seeing what’s happening here to me with RY? I now have people all over the world) we went to the Mardi Gras Parade which is a huge Gay Pride parade in Sydney, the countries largest by far. I ended up photographing the event for a friend I met in Croatia when I did Sail Croatia, she lives in Sydney. A big take away for me about Australia is that things are expensive especially traveling though South East Asia then to Australia. Drinks are $20, beers are all over $10, every meal is over $40 and if you smoke-forget it, $30 a pack! (All in Aussie Dollars).

Melbourne was another city I’ve been too back in 2001. I had no intentions to go back this time but a friend told me about the Great Ocean Road. The highlight is to see the Twelve Apostles at sunset. The Twelve Apostles are a group of natural rock formations in the ocean a few hours bus ride from Melbourne, another amazing natural wonder in Australia.  As I write this I just finished planning out my next route for the rest of my European stay. I head to Granada, Cordoba and then Northern Spain which should be about a weeks time. From there I go to France – Paris, Lyon, Marseilles, Cannes, Nice and probably Monaco. Italy is next…San Remo, Genoa, Cinque Terre, Pisa then Florence. I head back to Paris to meet up with my family for a “European Vacation” of sorts. My mother and sister’s first time in Europe along with my brother and nephew. We then hit London before I head to Bolivia for a week and São Paulo to visit another friend from RY, Stephanie. And finally back to the US in Florida on May 21st.

I will see how much more I write over the next month or so but maybe once a month to recap. Speak soon I hope.
