Back in Florida from my Summer in NYC

Going to New York as a visitor is kind of a difficult thing for me to wrap my head around. This was my 2nd time in NY visiting and staying at other peoples apt’s, homes, couches and extra bedrooms. When I did it for July 4th week I stayed in Battery Park city at my friend Pat’s apartment. I did appreciate all of the new completed construction, new shopping areas along with so many new restaurants. She also lives close to the World Trade Center site so I was able to see the finished Oculus built by my favorite architect Santiago Calatrava which is also my favorite New York building now. I also ate at Shake Shack there but it just doesn’t hold the same special feeling that it used to as they are all over the place now, I liked it better when there were only a few. For the time I was in New York I ended up staying in Tribeca, New Jersey, Long Island, Battery Park and the Flatiron area in my six weeks there. I appreciated more staying in Manhattan than in Long Island, my life is more focused in Manhattan.

This visit was a great opportunity for me to see most of my friends which I have not seen since at least October of 2016. I went out a lot this time, almost every night. My friends on Long Island Lauren and Lenny (we are friends since junior high school) live in Atlantic Beach which is where I stayed most of the time. Their house is less than a block from the beach which was fantastic as the weather this summer in August was really nice. I ended up staying in Tribeca at my friends John and Augie, friends for over 25 years now too. This was a nice surprise as they just moved back in to their large apartment so there was a pull out bed in the living room for me. My goal was to stay in New York until Labor Day weekend so I could see my married friends at my friend Dave’s daughter’s batmitzvah and I am glad that I did. One weekend I also stayed in NJ with my friend Ed who I did Remote Year with. My tour leader Matty was there too, it was the 1st time that I saw Matty since I got back to the US. Some of the things I had to do while I was back in NY was to move my furniture and boxed items that I stored for my travels into a storage unit. My friend Johnny helped me move my things from the Hampton’s to his storage unit (a basement in a building he owns) in Babylon, Long Island. I left most of my furniture and items in my friend Elise’s parents house since October of 2016 and they requested that I finally move it. I also moved most of my framed photos from my storage unit in Manhattan to John’s unit to save some money, $50 a month.

I just got back to Florida and need to work out my business model. I am here for a little while before I go to Bolivia on the 23rd for two weeks then on to Austin for a week to see Austin City Limits (ACL) with about 30 of my fellow travelers from Remote Year and maybe up to 50 from other groups that also did Remote Year. Once I get back to Florida in mid October I plan on really applying myself to build up my Photography business as I have let it slack since I have been traveling for almost two years. And on the traveling section of my life…I am planning on doing another Remote Year trip starting in January for 3 months. It is a 4 month trip but I am only doing 3 months-Cape Town in January, Marrakesh in February and Lisbon in March, the tour is called “Kuungana” by Remote Year. So my Remote Year life will continue into 2019.
